Before the viewing

  • Record the address, advertised cost and who you are dealing with.
  • Ask what bills and other costs are included, and what documents or checks the provider requires.
  • Consider the journey to campus and local transport options.

During the viewing

  • Ask about the condition of the room, shared areas, heating and facilities.
  • Check what furniture is included and discuss repairs or concerns with the provider.
  • Ask about access arrangements and how to raise maintenance issues.

Before deciding

  • Request written information about costs and terms, and read it carefully.
  • Seek independent advice if you are unsure about an agreement or payment request.
  • Keep a record of questions and the provider’s answers so you can compare options.

Before you pay, ask the practical questions.

  • Rent: what is the amount, payment schedule and tenancy length?
  • Bills: which bills are included, and which are paid separately?
  • Deposits: what payment is requested, what is it for, and what protection or refund terms apply? Ask for written details.
  • Guarantors: is one required, and what criteria or alternatives does the provider accept?
  • Travel distance: how long is the journey to campus, and what transport costs should you consider?
  • Before paying: who are you paying, what written terms apply, and what questions about the property or agreement remain unanswered? Seek independent advice if unsure.

Viewing assistance helps you explore options; it is not property verification, a legal assessment or a guarantee of accommodation.
